NRE 3105 Lecture 15: 15 Wetland Deliniation, Ecosystem Services
Document Summary
Hydrophytic vegetation criteria: >50% of dominant species are obl, facw, and fac, other indicators, visual observation of plant species in areas of prolonged inundation or soil saturation, adaptations: morphological, physiological, reproductive. Hydrology criteria: can use recorded data from usgs, nrcs, and state, county, and local agencies, field data includes, visual observation of inundation, visual observation of soil saturation, watermarks (trees, leaves, drift lines, sediment deposits, drainage patterns within wetlands. Wetland monitoring: hydrology, precipitation, water levels (surface and ground), soil moisture, flow, vegetation, sample percentages of aerial cover, hydrophytes, invasive, and woody plants, soils, wildlife, photography, water chemistry (vernal pools only) Ecosystem services: benefits for humans that the environment provides for us. Four kinds of ecosystem services: supporting, nutrient cycling, soil formation, primary production, etc, provisioning, food, water, wood and fiber, fuel, etc, regulating, climate, flood, and disease regulation, water purification, etc, cultural, aesthetic, spiritual, educational, recreational, etc.
