Smaller particles take longer to sink in the ocean. Red clay consists of dust carried from the continents and is the basic ingredient in all sediment. If there were no biological input of plant remnants from the surface, all sediments would be red clay. In areas where there has been or is a lot of biological input, the red clay content can be overwhelmed by the biological input. In areas of no bio. input, there is just red clay. The exoskeletons of radiolarians and diatoms are essentially made of glass (silica) The higher the pressure, the more (co2) gas dissolves. More acid, close to land, caco3 dissolves easier. Calcareous sediments only in areas above ccd. No calcareous sediment because it was dissolved. Need a dye, a semi conductor, and a structure that effectively captures light.
