For each noun, you can put a word in front of it to make the word more precise. The head of a noun phrase is a noun (those) students (of physics) are smart. Those is an example of the category of determiners (specifier) head (complement) John likes those students of physics those students of physics, john likes. John likes those students of physics john likes them. All elements that are exhaustively dominated by one node. Head+complement form a unit to the exclusion of the specifier. The constituent is the basic unit of syntax. 17 3 dominates a and 2, b and 1, c and d, 2 dominates b and 1 but also c and d. A b c d are constituents but b and d aren"t because 2 involves b, c, and d so it doesn"t take c into account. N-bar stands for head and complement but not for specifier. 21 gives structure of all noun phrases in english.
