Document Summary
Babbling begins at 6 months becomes variable and language specific by 12 months. Vocabulary explosion-for many children, word learning accelerates dramatically around 18 months. Complex morphology appears on words then more complex syntax (transformations) Shouldn"t be linked to ages, but by stages. It isn"t exact through age but all children go through the same stages in the same order. There is a critical period for language acquisition up to puberty. Johnson and newport(1989) studied english ability of us immigrants that arrived in country at different ages. Genie- discovered at age 13, kept in isolation, no language input sentences, never acquired language normally or progressed past this. Isabelle- discovered at age 6, made remarkable progress, by age 9 made remarkable progress, by age 9 she learned an extensive vocab, acquired complex syntactic constructions, and was scoring in the normal range for iq. Genie was after critical period, isabelle was in critical period. Very little variation between speakers of the creole.
