HDFS 2300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Child Custody, Noncustodial Parent, Socioeconomic Status
Document Summary
Financial stressors= men become upwardly mobile financially and women become less stable financially because of kids. Alcohol and drug abuse; depression; psychosomatic problems (mind-body problems); accidents all more common for divorced than non-divorced adults. Issues of perceived control, power, needs for help. Less is known about father-headed single parent homes. Much of research has focused instead on fathering and income. Most father-headed households improve financially (in contrast to mother-headed homes) Fathers found to be more likely to pay child support when they have higher income. Quality of emotional relationship with mother influences willingness to provide financial support. Tend to draw on family & new partners for support. Noncustodial moms tend to be more involved than noncustodial dads. Seen differently in the community than single moms. Less welcome in child care groups and school activities. "why are you here at mommy and me play group?"
