Influence of the family on the trajectory of an individual"s life. Type of family matters less than the patterns and dynamics within a family. To understand what makes a family unique, you have to understand the task a family has to do, and the way a family executes them. Shared sense of history (a historical legacy from being part of a multigenerational unit; how generations of family members have gotten along with each other over time) (ex. Your mother not getting along with her mother will influence how she treats you) Some degree of emotional bonding (strong, emotionally charged relationships; positive or negative) Strategies for meeting the needs of family members (broad compilation of tasks a family has to accomplish) Composition (eg. single-parent headed; nuclear; divorced; blended) Families today are more diverse than in the past. More families headed by divorced parents, remarried parents, and blended families. Actual rate: 1 in 8 marriages end in divorce.
