Task for couples: establish communication patterns that promote intimacy and manage conflict. Communication can build intimacy if done right, or erode intimacy if done wrong. Exchange of information in the form of messages. This is intentional communication that has the goal of increasing intimacy. Being empathic, being attentive, caring about their life. The way you feel about a person influences your communication. How you feel spills over into the transactional process whether you intend it to or not. Ongoing exchange of messages: tremendous about of information continuously communicated through meta messages. All communication provides information about self, other and relationship. Husband rolling their eyes when wife is talking about work problems communicates how they feel about themselves, the other, and the relationship. Content messages, the information that is conveyed in the words you use. Conveyed through tone of voice, behavior, space, nonverbal cues etc. Pay attention to this more than the actual content. It reinforces or contradicts the content message.
