HDFS 1070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 33: Shared Experience, Women Grow
Document Summary
> unique context of the family impacts on how the family system responds. > revisit the concepts of horizontal and vertical stressors. > death impacts on family members in unique and individual ways. > death reverberates throughout the entire family system. All family members need to have knowledge of death, be able to grieve: shared acknowledgement of the reality of the death. Takes a lot of emotional energy and time to keep secret, compromises life in a way, have to monitor and sensor contact with others. Effects reverberate throughout entire family-stresses those who have to keep them and effects those they are kept from-no trust, excluded, betrayed. Parents feel obligated to keep from children, but children do know something happened, decisions to keep or tell have different effects: shared experience of the pain of grief. Empathy is critical to show others that they matter and for us to feel as if we matter.
