Takes a lot of emotional energy and time to keep secret, compromises life in a way, have to monitor and sensor contact with others. Effects reverberate throughout entire family-stresses those who have to keep them and effects those they are kept from-no trust, excluded, betrayed. Parents feel obligated to keep from children, but children do know something happened, decisions to keep or tell have different effects: shared experience of the pain of grief. Empathy is critical to show others that they matter and for us to feel as if we matter.
