3 aspects of self theory: as we begin to develop our gender identity, we also gather information that judges our self esteem. Gender identity: your understanding of whether or not you are a boy or a girl. You start to learn and think about how you are supposed to act as a boy or a girl. Beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors: how you should act as a male or female. Gendered expectations for males and females: the extent to which you identify with masculinity or femininity. Behavioral blueprints that you are expected to act as if you are a female or male. Note: tendency is for males to be masculine and females to be feminine but: Males can have a feminine gender orientation. Acquisition process in spite of years and years of trying to find a biological basis for gender orientations the conclusion remains, the differences between males and females are due to social not biological factors.
