Space in Mise-en-Scene, is one of the mediums of communication.
Space tells us:
- Social and psychological relationship
- The dramatic importance or insignificance of a character
- More space means more power/dominance

Proxemic Patterns
- Spatial conventions vary from culture to culture
- In film we deal with:
o space between characters
o space between characters and audience
- Our eyes identify with the camera; shots recreate ranges between audience and characters
on screen
- The closer we are, the greater our emotional involvement
4 major proxemic patterns
1. Intimate (love) – usually 0-18inches shown with extreme close
2. Personal (friendship)- usually 18in- 4ft shown with medium shot
3. Social (casual)- usually 4ft-12ft, shown with medium to full shot
4. Public (formal) usually 12ft-25+ft shown with extreme long, long
Functions of Art
“prodesse et delectare” = teach and entertain; enlighten and provide pleasure

- Are there some inherently evil people or can everyone become evil, given certain
circumstances

o Fight against any treatment that is dis-humanizing and degrading, any cruel and
