Japan has a checkered environmental past, but it is a current leader in green technology. China has a terrible environmental record, but things are improving. China has severe environmental pollution as a result of its emphasis on economic growth cancer rates attributed to air and water pollution are at unprecedented levels. Air quality is particularly bad in the older industrial areas of shanghai and the northeast, and near beijing.
