The rome iii consensus criteria: (2 or more of the following) Straining during at least 25% of defecations. Lumpy/ hard stools in at least 25% Anorectal obstruction/ blockage for at least 25% Manual maneuvers to facilitate at least 25% Loose stools are rarely present without using laxatives. Neurogenic disorders (diabetes, ms, spinal cord injury, parkinsons) Diseases of the small/ large bowel (tumors, hernias, strictures, ibs) Rectal sphincters: external (voluntary control), internal (autonomic nervous system involuntary control) Labs: colonoscopy, ct of abdomen, manual rectal exam, digital rectal exam. Client hx: normal pattern/ frequency of bowel movements (use rome iii, concurrent diseases, medications they are on (such as opioids) Pes: inadequate fluid intake r/t lack of knowledge of fluid requirements aeb statement that you get all the water you need from coffee.
