Document Summary

Between 10 and 100 million species on earth. Reproductive isolation is the key to the biological species concept (bsc) Bsc concept is 1st defined by alfred russel wallace and ernst mayr who said, Species are groups of actually or potentially interbreeding populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Bsc is difficult to apply in the field. Instead we use the morphospecies concept (most individuals of the same species look alike) Ring species share dna indirectly through intermediate populations where interbreeding occurs. Ecological species concept (esc) and evolutionary species concept (evsc) Ecology of species should be what defines it as a species. Ecological niche space is limited, so no two species can have the same niche. If you have the same niche, you are the same species. Limited to use with asexual species (primarily) Baseline time allowed is 200 million years. Does not work well for sexual species.
