Document Summary

Example: theory of gravity; we revolve around the sun. Genetic variation - difference in dna sequences. Penguins and fruit flies are more variable than humans. Variable means more variability around the mean. Patterns can be described by allele frequencies. Allele - variation of a gene; different options for the gene. Think of playing cards: there are 4 types of each card, and they are the same but look different. Alleles on each chromosome - one can be dominant or recessive or both. If mutations didn"t exist, there"d be no variation, species, etc. Occur in all cells except for germ cells (sperm and egg) More important because these mutations get passed down. Mutations can be neutral, advantageous, or dangerous. Takes place in meiosis 2 (tetrads get together, split, then switch) Allele frequency = # of copies of an allele divided by total # of alleles in population.
