Document Summary

The life cycle of animals is dominated by the diploid stage: haploid gametes are made by meiosis in animals but are made by mitosis in plants and fungi. Sexual reproduction: when 2 becomes one: meiosis and fertilization. Asexual advantage: no competition for mates, no spending any energy and time to find or attract a mate, can have exponential population growth, in sexual reproduction only half of the population produces offspring. Red queen hypothesis (parasite defense): organisms have to adapt fast not just to get an advantage, but merely to survive; you are evolutionarily running as fast as your can just to stay where you are. You must constantly make new defenses in the arms race just to survive. Internal v external fertilization: most externally fertilizing animals occur in water. They must produce a lot of sperm, because of higher chance of failure.
