Document Summary

Core concept 4: challenges to the efficiency of psn include excess light energy and the oxygenase activity of rubisco. Reactive oxygen species: when not enough nadp+ is available, antennae chlorophyll can transfer energy to o2 or Under normal conditions, the redox reactions that make up the photosynthetic electron transport chain do not allow either absorbed light energy or the resulting high-energy electrons to stray. However, when nadp+ is in short supply, either the absorbed light energy or the energy and the associated electron can be transferred to o2, resulting in the formation of highly reactive oxygen species. Xanthophylls convert excess light energy to heat, reducing the rate at which electrons enter the electron transport chain. When co2 reduction cannot keep up with light harvesting, two lines of defense are employed: antioxidant detoxification and xanthophylls. Antioxidants such as ascorbate, beta carotene, and other antioxidants are able to neutralize reactive oxygen species.
