BIOL 1107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Mitosis, Metaphase, Chromosome
Document Summary
Technically no bc completely free living (don"t depend on anything) Can you always, when you look at any of your cells see cells structured like this: at that cell"s division. Whats behind the chromosomes: organelles- mitochondria, ribosomes, er, cell has to organizw that and tries to partition them equally so it"s similar to parent cell. We tend to focus on chromosomes bc it contains the genetic material: do not want who gets what chromosome to vary every time. If human cell has 46 chromosomes in native state then what should you have in metaphase: 92 chromosomes, if new cells inherit 46 chromosomes, parent cell has to replicate all of its chromosomes. Purpose of mitosis: to distribute every part of cell, focus on chromosomes bc of genetics and can see them. Mitosis very short part of cells life; quick: ecoli divides every 20 min, other cells could take 2-3 days. Majority of time cells aren"t even dividing.
