ANTH 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Flags Of The Confederate States Of America, Cultural Anthropology, Culture Shock
Document Summary
Give an example of an explicit and implicit symbol. Examples of implicit symbols: explicit symbols: symbols that have one meaning that we can all agree on. They are not controversial: a traffic light is an example of an explicit symbols. It tells us when to stop, go, and slow down. The colors are not disputed neither what they represent. Implicit symbols: symbols that have more than one meaning and people do not agree on what the meaning is. The swastika is an example of an implicit symbol because it has many meanings and evokes different emotions in individuals. In some cultures it represents good luck, positivity: only after nazis started using them did they begin to represent hate, murder, and genocide, the confederate flag. Southern culture: the flag has nothing to do with slavery, racism, or the civil war. They are proud of their unique southern culture. Southern way of life: outlaw culture: we are the only free americans left.
