Mardi Gras/ Carnival- takes place in new Orleans (heavily catholic
places in the world) takes place over several weeks. Indulgence-rules
will be broken. Rich will dress like the poor and men will dress like
women (vice versa). Women will show their breasts for beads. On ash
Wednesday, day of sacrifice. Catholics will have ash on their foreheads
to sacrifice certain things on that day. Through this sacrifice after this
period of indulgence and you become a better person/ catholic.
Spring Break- Breaking the rules and not being punished. It began in
the 1950s in Florida. The economic and political leaders realized that
if they were a bit more flexible with the rules, and allowed them the
students some freedom, they would come back, bring friends and
spend lots of money. This would be the period of indulgence. Period
of sacrifice is having to go back and having to get ready for final
exams. Renewal would be after you graduate
Recess- everyday we ask children to do things to do things they don’t
want to do such as going to school and sitting and paying attention.
Time of indulgence would be letting them out to be children and enjoy
recess. Time of sacrifice is coming in from recess and sacrificing their
bits of childhood so they can be educated and become better people.
Renewal would be so they can come back to class become educated
and become better people.
Purpose of Ritual Time Ceremonies- To allow people to relieve stress in
a way that can be controlled by society.

3 stages.
Rites of passage- the marking of individuals moving from one social role to
another- began like ritual time ceremonies. We find them in every kind of
culture including partially traditional and partially contemporary.
Main Purpose- To reproduce the culture
Three stages of a rite of passage
Separation
Transition liminal status/communitas
Reaggregation
All cultures in one way or another will participate in this gender and age specificity.
A rite of passage that is gender specific, girls will go through this rite of passage with
other girls and same with boys. Age specific would be all the boys and girls would be
roughly the same age. When girls successfully accomplish this right of passage they
will be women and boys will be men and can pass on and reproduce the culture.
Masai- example of right of passage that is gender and age specific.
Masai land is an area that is very remote and it is very beautiful. A place where it has
some of the largest populations of hyena and lions, and some of the most poisonous
