It"s important to engage in discussion and not to avoid it. We need to be embracing, cultivating and celebrating diversity. It"s the social inequalities that impact who is impacted the most when disasters such as this occur. The topic of race and racism is a difficult but important topic of conversation. The united states sometimes likes to think that it is color-blind meaning that we do not see someone as being black or as being white, but see them as being people. With the election of barack obama, some people believed that we were no longer a racist society. Some progress has been made in our society, but incidents often uncover a deep seated racism in our culture.
