Planning A Successful Early Childhood
• An Effective Director must be knowledgeable
o In many areas of the center’s operation
o Must be sensitive to external factors that would impact its operation
o Have a vision –for a high-quality program
o Vision must align with the sponsor’s purpose
o Based on an articulated philosophy of care and education
o Care and education should reflect cultures and values of the children and families
served
o Meet a community need
o Share vision with stakeholders
o Develop a mission statement, and its implementation
o Plan your program assessments/evaluations
Strategic Planning – 4 Step Process
• Identify core values – as a staff
• Create a vision statement – this is a description of what program is striving to achieve
• Mission statement – a succinct description
o What the program is doing now
o Who it serves
o Why it exists
• Evaluation Plan – to reach short-term and long-term plans
Developing A Statement of Your Program’s Core Values
• Early Childhood education core values (as a staff)
o Appreciate childhood is a unique and valuable stage of the human life cycle
o Base our work on knowledge of how children develop and learn
o Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family
o Recognize that children are best understood and supported in the context of
family, culture, community and society
o Respect the dignity, worth and uniqueness of everyone (child, family members
and colleague)
o Respect diversity in children, families and colleagues
o Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of
relationships that are based on trust and respect
