Each stage represents the challenges a person faces at a certain age. If the person doesn"t overcome the challenges then they are likely to become ongoing problems. Infants learn to trust based upon the response of caregivers. Stage 2: toddlerhood: will autonomy v. shame ad doubt. If parents give the child a safe home from which they can explore the world and encourage the child"s interests and grow independence. If parents discourage them or foster excessive dependence may develop feelings of shame. Preschoolers are focused on doing things themselves and making their own goals. When this is nurtured the child grows into an adult who takes initiative. Stage 4: early school years: competence industry v. inferiority. Children who accomplish things and are praised for those achievements develop self-confidence. Identity crisis stage where adolescents must establish an identity, goals, and a purpose. Stage 6: young adulthood: love intimacy v. isolation. When many people get married or enter into significant relationships.
