Document Summary

Circulatory system: heart, blood vessels, blood. Pulmonary & systemic circuits: major divisions. Oxygen-poor blood returns via the inferior and superior venae cavae. Blood sent to the lungs via pulmonary trunk. Oxygen-rich blood arrives from the lungs via pulmonary veins. Blood sent to all organs via the aorta. Heart positioning: located in mediastinum, between lungs, base: wide, superior portion, apex: tapered, inferior end, adult = 10 oz (roughly) Pericardium: sac around the heart: allows heart to beat without friction, provides room to expand, yet resists expansion. Valves: ensure one-way blood flow, atrioventricular (av) valves. Between atrium and ventricles: chordae tendinae. Cords that connect av valves to papillary muscles on floor of ventricles. Prevent av valves form flipping or bulging into atria when ventricles contract. Blood flow through chambers: blood pathway travels from the right atrium through the pulmonary circuit, then ystemic circuit (through body) and back to the starting point. Coronary circulation: 5% of blood goes to heart itself.
