Relationship between language revitalization and native american education efforts. 3 goals of language revitalization: supporting and sustaining distinctive cultural identities. American indian school to be controlled by an all-native governing board. All the students she met with spoke navajo languages. There"s been a general displacement from navajo languages to english languages: supporting and sustaining linguistic and cultural diversity. There are about 7500 known spoken languages. Linguistic hotspots: places with languages in danger of dying out. Linguists suggest that 90% of known languages will be replaced by a few hundred dominant languages. This goal tries to halt this language loss: reducing inequities in education for this group of students(?) As more native american children speak english, as a greater group, they haven"t reached english dominance. These programs are designed to reconnect people with their kin, future generations, etc. Self-determination & sovereignty: fort mohave community project. When the youth showed up, so did the elders.
