SOCIOL 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: American Medical Association, Direct Manipulation Interface, Medical Device
Document Summary
Medicine: things we can treat mostly on an individual (with chemicals, surgery, or sometimes direct manipulation of the body) there are many aspects of physical well-being that we don"t consider medical. Ex. air pollution - has an effect on our health, but we don"t consider it as under jurisdiction of medical institution. Logics behind medical institution logic: what is appropriate, effective, and reasonable for that institution (helps us understand the thinking behind why that institution does what it does and how it operates the way it operates) Dominant logic in medical institution = science. Science - defines the problems that come under the institution of medicine, proposes solutions, provides rationale for what is accepted and what is not accepted (dominant logic) language that is generally used to fortify other logics. Several forms, in terms of: technology, training of medical professionals, enforcement of boundaries around the medical institution (what the medical institution has jurisdiction over and what it doesn"t)
