Document Summary

Lecture 5 - basic concepts: interactions & everyday life. Sociology involves going across a continuum - from the very micro, small-scale life to the very macro, large-scale life. Start with small-scale aspects of sociology (interaction) We view interaction through bracketing: looking at things as though from the outside (pretending like we don"t know anything about the lives that we lead) 1: leads to insight we want to understand the world we live in. 2: can explain the features of interaction, in sociological terms ( why/how things happen the way they do ) 3: hope to understand the underlying nature of reality itself. Assumptions needed to be made, as a sociologist. 1: it"s not just random events there is order and pattern, so that we can use analytical tools to understand what is going on. 2: everyday interaction is complex enough that it requires special systematic methods to understand what is going on.
