Front stage: where we present ourselves to others. Back stage: impression management is relaxed; we may practice our performance. Total institutions: all areas of social life are conducted in the same place. The ways individuals seek to control the impressions they convey to others. Impressions given: those you believe you are giving. Impressions given off: the impression the other person has of you. Face: positive image an individual tries to create in a social context. Line: verbal and nonverbal actions used to create/maintain your face. Face-work: actions done to maintain a positive self-image when interacting with others. People occupy multiple roles and act differently in each. The process whereby a basserby quickly glances at another and then looks away again. Unfocused interaction: when individuals exhibit awareness of one another"s presence.
