Large community based study, some samples are more representative than others. Prevalence is bigger, incidence is only new cases of the problem. Almost half of people will have a mental health problem in their lifetime. Anxiety is most common category: social fears. Most common individual disorder: depression, alc abuse, phobias, conduct disorder. Comorbidity: person has more than 1 problem at a time. 40% of people who need services actually get treatment. Ethnic minorities 205-35% of people get treatment who need treatment. Most tx done on an outpatient basis unless posing threat to self or others. Pre-disposing factors: demographics (age, gender, ethnicity, martial ststus, health beliefs. Enabling factors (logistics) ex) insurance, transportation, type of provider, social support, childcare, language, time. Perceptions of need: way people view their own health needs, functioning (how bad impairment, pain is) Psychologist, social worker, masters in fam therapy diagnosis w/ therapy. Pastoral counselor, substance abuse counselor, paraproffesionals therapy (end of chapter 1)
