Definition: the branch of psychology that studies unusual patterns of behavior, emotion, and thoughts which may or may not be related to a mental disorder. If it causes suffering, if it causes more than one of the elements to occur. Maladaptiveness: cant pay attention in class, cant go to work because of panic attack. Some things could be outside the average but not considered abnormal. Violation of the standards of society: our norms and values will effect what we think about behaviors such as being thin, getting piercings, tattoos. People didn"t want to be super skinny and wanted more meat on the bones, now people aspire to diet etc. Social discomfort: ex) biopolar, manic depression have mania. They may not have a problem with themselves, but pther people around them are discomforted because of their non top talking, random behavior.
