Document Summary

It is a model of the thing it represents. The representing world reflects aspects of the represented world (real) A representation is representational system that encompasses what is representing, what is represented, and the connections between then. Examples: napoleon graph, evolution image, a map that shows how streets are gridded. We are able to represent so much in one photo. The connections between elements of the representing world are called relations. These connections can be spatial or abstract. The relations in a representation are operational relations (defined by a process that interprets a representation) Ex: of the solar system and the atom. Preserving information in a representation is equivalent to preserving the relations. Different scales/ resolutions/ grains of the representation. Height as tall or short vs height as 1, 2, 3, etc. Ex: color naming has a smaller resolution than simply seeing colors. *cognitive psychology is the study of what is represented about the world.
