Document Summary

Music-making varies greatly among cultures, but the fact that it"s found in all societies suggests humans have a need to compose, perform, and listen to music. These roots can be found in biology. Example: i think i still hear aria from the pearl fishers. Same interpretation of emotion in all humans by bizet. Without conscious effort, the brain translates patterns of acoustic energy into music"s basic elements: Rhythm,: pattern of timing in the sounds. Where sound is processed for their meaning. Further subdivided into primary auditory cortex and secondary auditory cortex. Many aspects of music are processed in the secondary auditory cortex. Amusia: difficulties in processing music or musical elements. Tone deafness: inability to discriminate tones on a scale. ( all tones sound the same says the patient) Melody deafness: inability to recall melodies or recognize melodies. However, patient can still recognize the instrument from just hearing the sound--the timbre.
