Document Summary

Psychology = the scientific investigation of behavior and mental processes. Behavior = observable actions of humans and animals. Mental processes= i. e. the mind, private inner experiences - perceptions, thoughts (decision making), memories, and feelings. Biological / physiological / neuroscience (cid:1) brain, neurons, neurochemicals. Hindsight bias = belief that outcome was foreseeable after it occurred. Findings seem obvious when we know them, were once controversial. The expert blindspot - once you know the answer, it is impossible to know how it felt like not knowing. Perceiving order in random events - we try to find order/patterns in random events another type of bias. Fallacies of randomness - hot hand; on a roll; hot streak. Gambler"s fallacy - bound to come up eventually; it"s due to happen. We can"t always trust ourselves to be good observers. The scientific method helps us overcome these biases. Hobbes and many others: mind is what the brain does.
