Measure time lag when ball hit the platform and when they pressed the telegraph key. Structuralism (edward titchener): introspection to define mind"s makeup. Task is to find basic elements of consciousness. Introspection, self-reported data: reported sensations + other experiences. Used report to build structure of mind. All subjective, can"t generalize to everyone, therefore faded after his death. Functionalism (william james): how mental processes allow to adapt, survive + flourish. Task to investigate function/ purpose of conscious. Influenced by darwin"s theory that characteristics had adaptive purposes. Wrote 1st psychology book principles of psychology (1890) Mentored by james @ harvard, did not receive degree, instead received from sister school; refused. Wrote book the animal mind (1908), research in animal behavior. Study behavior w/ out reference to mental processes x.
