Document Summary

History- people used to be thrown into institutions and treated as dangerous animals, threats to society (stigma of what mentally ill people and associated institutions look like) Modern social conception of talking on the couch- not the only kind of treatment. We have come a long way thanks to science, things believed to be disorders before are no longer considered disorders anymore. 1998 task force on empirically validated therapies- established criteria for empirical support of treatment strategy. Well-established treatments- at least 2 experiments showing the treatment is either better than a placebo or equivalent to an already established treatment. Probably efficacious- 2 experiments showing treatment is superior to a wait-list control group. Bad news- advances have had little impact on contemporary practice because providers still use their previous experience, but psychotherapy still works really well. Costs: expensive for patients, providers have to commit, society and government have to pay for the insurance. Freud and his famous couch- psychotherapy/talk therapy.
