There is a long history of hatred towards certain groups. We have overcome prejudice against certain groups, but there is always an us vs. them mentality, and someone is marginalized. Stereotypes- cognitive schemas about the members of a certain group. Prejudice- attitudes towards a person based on his/her membership in a specific group. Associations that lead to attitudes about people solely based on membership in group. Benefits of stereotypes- principles of cognitive economy (having stereotypes are necessary for dealing with people, but if we didn"t have them, we wouldn"t know how to behave towards certain things) Reduced discriminations- minimize the number of labels in the world. Informativeness- maximize the number of inferences that can be made. Classical conditioning- learned associations developed overtime, people that have these characteristics are associated with a certain category. Social learning theory- stereotypes taught from family/peers. In-group (people who are like you) vs. out group (everyone else)
