PSYCH 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Neuroglia, Resting Potential, Neurogenesis
Document Summary
Everything in the human experience boils down to neural firing rfweek 2 lecture 4- neuroanatomy. Different neurons are programmed to do different things, so many of them look very different. Electrical communication- neurons have specialized membranes that make them polarized, and this charge can be measured with a microelectrode. Glial cells- cells that help neurons work, more numerous and less studied than neurons, have different functions as well. Oligodendrocytes- produce myelin (fatty coating that wraps around cells and axons and facilitates transmission of impulses) Science-tale- people used to believe that there were glia for every neuron (leading to assumption that we only use 10% of our brains) Did not take into account that neurons are dispersed unevenly, and that cerebellum has 50% of brain cells in only 5% of brain area. Different parts of brain have different glia numbers. Resting potential- inside of neuron has a negative charge relative to extracellular space (-70 mv)
