Document Summary

Use of stem cells in dmd models & clinical trials. Dystrophin in the context of stem cell biology: When it"s missing, the whole muscle membrane is fragile, it becomes leaky, cues methods where the muscle cell needs to be replaced and generate new muscle. Goes through a series of phases from a quiescent cell to ones that divide and then ones that rise to new regenerated cells. Satellite cells regulate regeneration from injury in vivo. Myoblasts come to the site of the injury and make new cells to repair the current muscle cells. Occurs over days, remodeling of the muscle that gives rise to new muscles. Murine model of dmd - mdx mouse: point mutation in exon 23 - premature stop codon, muscular dystrophy, muscles undergo necrosis and regeneration, can be used to study pathophysiology. The continuous battle of cell regeneration eventually leads to cell death.
