PHILOS 31 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Pepperoni, Immortal Souls, Christian Mortalism
Document Summary
If everything is mental, then nothing is physical unless something is both mental and physical. If those who believe in god have immortal souls, then, given that god exists, they will have eternal bliss. All fruits and vegetables are wholesome and nourishing. If any woman studies, then no student passes unless she does. Dogs and dolphins jump only if spot and kiwi are petted. X((fx(cid:1940)kx(cid:1940)jx) ~gx = slimy mushroom pizzas are not good. X((fx(cid:1940)(kx(cid:1940)lx)) gx) = pizzas with either mushrooms or pepperoni are good. ~ x((fx(cid:1940)kx)(cid:1940)lx)(cid:1940)~gx) = no pizzas with mushrooms and pepperoni are not good. X(fx(cid:1940)kx(cid:1940)lx gx) = all pizzas with mushrooms and pepperoni are good. X((fx(cid:1941)gx) ( y(hy(cid:1940)jx) kx))- cannot ui to y here because it is recaptured by y. Be careful of the variable you use, because every variable should be free by the end of the step, not recaptured by another quantifier: existential generalization (eg)- if a particular thing has a property, then something does.
