Document Summary

Add a phosphate (atp->adp) using rate limiting enzyme/universal enzyme: hexokinase. This enzyme is in plants, animals, fungi. Goes to glucose 6-phosphate so that it maintains gradient (no longer glucose) Converted to fructose 6-phosphate by phosphohexose isomerase. Converted by phosphofructokinase with atp to fructose 1,6-biphosphate. Glycer 3 phosphate favored, so isomerase converts the dihy phosphate to glycer 3 phosphate. Nadh generated by glycer 3 phosphate, temporary energy store. In total, glycolysis uses 2 atp, gains 4 atp (net gain 2 atp) 2 nadh and two pyruvate molecules. Pyruvate goes through outer membrane into intermembrane space through inner membrane. Series of chemical reactions, no atp generated, but 2 nadh molecules. Series of chemical reactions, don"t have to know reactants and products. Protein complex 1, protein plus metals, positively charged huge affinity for electrons. At protein complex 1 nadh because nad+, pc1 function: oxidizes nadh, pc1 reduced. Hydrogen ion is transferred into the intermembrane space by pc1.
