LIFESCI 2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Integrin, Phagosome, Mast Cell
Document Summary
Immune system- main function to protect you. Forms a protection layer around us, prevents against attack by pathogen. When we are attacked, launches attack against invaders. Any substance or organism that may invade our body are invaders. Why do they invade? we are an unlimited source of food/energy for them. Here specifically, we"re talking about multicellular worms. Come from contaminated food or burrowing through skin. Single-celled eukaryotes, can be very harmful, disease-causing. Not classified as living organisms but can be highly pathogenic. Pathogens like to go to the liver, small intestine, They get there through the blood circulation, that is their first goal when they get in your body to get to the blood so they can migrate. Protects against foreign substnaces without having to recognize their identity. Prevention- thick membranes such as the skin, pathogens have trouble getting through skin. Mucus membranes in ears, nose, act as prevention. Tears, saliva, stomach acid, all defense mechanisms.
