Document Summary

At the start of the 19th century europe was still a rural continent and majority of population was peasant farmers. England was about 79% rural in 1815 (lowest percentage of rural) Scotland 83% belgium 86% france 90% prussia 93% hungarian 95% russia 96% norway. 1850 was when industrialisation was pretty much widespread. England in 1848 had 50% in industrial cities 50% land. And other europe nations became less rural but none as drastically as england. Great deal of west to east movement and the percentage of rural population increases as you move east. Wealth was measured in terms of how much land you owned. If you were a nobleman you owned lots of estates. You could divide the continent into 3 different landholding systems. Most prevalent in france, italian states, sweden, and portions of the western german states. These areas were at one point conquered by napoleon so feudalism was abolished.
