Something that is being threatened by ideas of globalization. It remains as one of the most important forms of identity. Nation states: territorial state apparatus + national identity: rise of nation state coincides with imperialism around 1870"s, suggests there is something important in the states that holds people together. State: apparatus of rule within territorial boundaries, wave of colonization has made countries respect boundaries and borders. Nation: group of people who see themselves as belonging together. National identity: origin myth, selective memory e. g. being a part of a common sacrifice, print capitalism/ mass literacy people are reading the same news, led to perceived identity among strangers. Imagined does not equal fake/false it may not be historically correct, but it is very important. Due to media/tech, there is homogenization of identities, we feel connected to people.
