If trait is invisible, type of stigma is discreditable and strategy is to pass: imitate something else to gain the social advantage. If trait is visible, type of stigma is discredited and strategy is to cover: purposely not draw any attention to the trait. If using resistance strategy, those with invisible traits come out and those with visible traits flaunt. Acceptance: covert to ex-gay, pass to stay closeted, cover to be normal (assimilated gay that does not emphasize the difference) Refusal: covert to gay, come out, and become queer (flaunting/in your face) Yoshino argues that lesbians and gay men should neither cover nor flaunt. Understands that this is a personal and contextual decision. Objects to government demands that people engage in these strategies.
