GE CLST M1A Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Agroecosystem, Cassava, Overnutrition
Document Summary
Our most important interaction with environment is obtaining food. Current food production is sufficient to meet worldwide demand. Malnutrition: abnormal physiological condition caused by inadequate, unbalanced or excessive consumption of macronutrients and/or micronutrients. Undernourishment: a state, lasting for at least one year, of inability to acquire enough food to meet dietary energy requirements. Future worldwide need for food will increase. Human population size and rate of growth. To meet future demand, need to use more available land suitable for agriculture. Can no longer simply move to new areas. Agroecosystem: cleaning land resulting in new ecosystem. Isd cultivated for food on large scale. 6 provide > 80% of human food. Non-food crops take agricultural land away from food production. Does not emit ghgs but takes up land and carbon loss. Cleaning vegetations reduces accumulation of organic matter. Crops grow well at first but over years, soil quality deteriorates.
