Lecture 13: the problem of mental illness personality disorders & anxiety disorders. Mentally ill characteristics: deviant behavior, hallucinations, cognitive distortion. People think automatically that it is a physical disorder in the brain. Can"t diagnose mental illness as a physical disorder: these are cognitive or emotional disorders, disturbing and incapacitating behaviors as a result of buse and trauma. 3 kinds of therapy: physical treatments, talk therapy, normalization of environment and activities. Traditional views of mental illness: spiritual possession - fools of god, demonic possession or bewitchment, humoral imbalance: sanguine, choleric and melancholic (depression, black bile) Descartes: the mind is rational, madness must be a disorder of the body of the mind-brain connection, pineal gland out of order, so he assumed it was a physical problem. Asylums built: st. mary"s of bethlehem hospital in london, bedlam. Acute humoral treatment blood letting: hotel dieu. Professional asylum keepers: took patients in their own care. Michel foucault"s theory of social control: madness as a cultural construct.
