Olfactory epithilia goes right to the primary olfactory cortex (base of frontal lobe and medial temporal lobe) - > thalamus - > amygdala (limbic system) or oribtol frontal cortex (conscious perception) Petit mal el effect: having an olfactory sense pull you into a memory. The function of the visual system is to use light energy to identify the objects and layout of the physical world. Rather than giving us a very accurate picture for the properties of light that are present the visual system creates representations that are useful. The visual system evolved to accentuate edges because of their importance in identifying objects. Edges are particularly important when identifying something. Based on info in the picture, it makes sense that you perceive a triangle on top of black circles. The visual system responds to a band of electromagnetic radiation.
