Sociological study of how immigrant adapt and are incorporated into new society. Part of us sociology because of extensive immigration in past and present. Movement or project to teach or force immigrants or non-europeans into the us cultural system. Over time, immigrant groups become more similar to native group in norms, values, behaviors, and characteristics. Later generations will show greatest similarities with majority group. Painful bipolar process: immigrants pulled toward host culture but drawn back to culture of origin. Natural race relations cycle of contact, competition, accommodation. Assimilate into constant mainstream of anglo-saxon protestant. Indistinguishable from mainstream intermarriage, identification, civic participation, and ending of prejudice and discrimination. Melting pot used in 1908 premiere of play the melting by israel zangwill. America is god"s crucible, the great melting pot where all the races of europe are melting and reforming! . Anglo-conformist because immigrant groups were depicted as conforming to unchanging, middle-class, whist protestant values.
