EPS SCI 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, Seafloor Spreading, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Document Summary
Widely assumed to have begun sometime in the 20th century. Saw design of elaborate experiments, highly complex instruments, many new technology. Meteor: an expedition ship that sailed to the south atlantic ocean. Scientists used very developed equipment to complete a survey of the ocean. They were able to map the rugged topography of the deep sea and made charts on salinity of the water a s afunction of depth, also drew charts for temperature and dissolved oxygen at numerous hydrographic stations. This research was so unprecedented that after that, the meteor became the standard for scientific research. World wars saw a decrease in development of oceanography research. Civilian scientists recruited to conduct basic oceanographic research, restricted activities to problems that were of interest mainly to the military. Postwar government-sponsored support led to great advances in instrumentation, also led to sea-grant colleges that conducted important oceanic research.
