Document Summary

Coastal productivity is higher in temperate vs tropical regions. Rocky shores, rocky reefs, kelp forests, coral reefs. Hard and soft bottom can bleed into each other. Coastal side is sucked down and mountains form up. Mountains move to the sea cuz plates move. Soft bottom comes from same geological processes as hard bottom. Mountain forms, snow breaks rocks when melting and fast velocity. Freezing of water makes water expand in rocks. When in rocks, water expands and breaks apart rocks. Water flowing down mountains will transport rocks based on velocity of water and size of rock. Higher mountains = steeper = faster water = larger rocks move = rocks move further. When water moves further from mountain, not as steep, so slower water. Movement is boulders > cobble > gravel > sand > silt > clay. Therefore there can be muddy beaches depending on water speed. North east us was glaciated so rocky bottom.
