L e c t u r e 1 2. Sequels (movies that continue previously established plots): star. Remakes (remaking of an older movie with modest changes): Psycho, ocean 11 ~just a retelling, stand alone . Prequels (tells a story that takes place earlier than in the original): Reboot (retelling the original story with a different twist): batman. Begins ~usually series, discards previous story, start over new, closer to original source material. Today: challenging to make personal movies in hollywood. Movies based on tv shows, books, (video) games, comics (prior familiarity/plot expressed within a new medium): 21 jump. Bottom line (amount of money made and spent on movies in- creased): avatar, most expensive movie ~increase in int. Greater cost = greater obligation to appeal to everybody (lcd) ~dumb-down scripts, happy ends = wide & shallow. Money game (actors making huge bucks): tom cruise ~20$ million/ lm. million club: demand million and get it.
